Following the recent announcement of part funding by the Government-backed Technology Strategy Board, the partners in the KinerStor project have today announced further details of their collaborative programme to demonstrate the viability of low-cost flywheel hybrid systems.

The KinerStor project will be led by Ricardo and will comprise a consortium of industrial partners including CTG, JCB, Land Rover, SKF, Torotrak and Williams Hybrid Power. The project aims to demonstrate the potential of flywheel-based hybrid systems with the potential for 30 per cent fuel savings (and equivalent reductions in CO2 emissions) at an on-cost of less than £1000, thus enabling the mass-market uptake of hybrid vehicles in price sensitive vehicle applications.

The project will research and de-risk the principle critical flywheel sub-systems individually, then bring them together for system optimisation in two forms of proprietary device; a mechanical/magnetic coupled flywheel system developed by Ricardo (known by the trade name Kinergy), and an electrically coupled unit developed by Williams Hybrid Power. The flywheel systems being developed by the KinerStor consortium partners are ideally suited for potential applications in passenger cars ranging from small, price-sensitive mass-market models through to large luxury SUVs, as well as in low-cost compact energy storage systems for application in industrial and construction equipment.

The KinerStor project team aims to design, build and test a number of prototype units such that on completion, the developed technologies are ready for vehicle-based installation, testing and demonstration.

The KinerStor consortium brings together a critical mass of relevant skills and expertise in specialist areas, including: advanced flywheel systems, focusing on new material technologies including low-cost composite fibres and specialist steels; continuously variable transmissions; bearing and coupling design; drivetrain integration; and volume vehicle manufacturing. The project’s structure will allow for the development of common coretechnology solutions which can be tailored to the individual needs of vehicle manufacturers, maximising potential fuel saving and CO2 emission reduction benefits.

Commenting on today’s announcement, Ricardo group technology director Neville Jackson said: “The development of highly optimised flywheel based technology offers the prospect of the effective and low-cost hybridisation of price-sensitive vehicle applications with consequent benefits to fuel economy and CO2 emissions reduction. Ricardo is pleased to be able to lead the KinerStor consortium which brings together a crucial mass of skills and expertise in this important area of future automotive technology.”

The KinerStor project is supported by an investment from the Government-backed Technology Strategy Board with balancing resources provided by the project partners.

Canadian GP back on – at a fraction of Ecclestone’s price

The popular Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal will later this week be given the green light to return to the F1 calendar in 2010, claim reports – at just a fraction of the $175 million CAN fee Formula One Management chief executive Bernie Ecclestone had originally been demanding
The Canadian Grand Prix is set to be definitively confirmed on the 2010 F1 World Championship calendar, according to reports – at an annual fee some $20 million CAN (£11.3 million) less than commercial rights-holder Bernie Ecclestone had originally been demanding.

The popular race was removed from the F1 schedule in 2009 as the result of an ongoing financial dispute between Ecclestone’s Formula One Management (FOM) company and then race promoter Grand Prix du Canada, run by Normand Legault. The former’s stipulation for the grand prix to be re-instated was initially a staggering $175 million CAN over five years – but now it appears a deal has been hammered out for just $75 million CAN.

At the end of what has been described as a ‘marathon’ of negotiations bedevilled by obstacles and ultimatums, an agreement has been reached between Ecclestone and the three levels of government involved, with the green light set to be given later this week to finally confirm the currently provisional 13 June date on the F1 2010 schedule, following a number of false dawns. French-language Montreal newspaper La Presse reports that such an announcement is now merely ‘a formality’.

It is also stated that the organisations who will foot the annual $15 million CAN bill – the governments of Québec, Ottawa and Montreal and the Montreal Tourism association – had been unsure about pushing ahead with the deal in the wake of the recent manufacturer withdrawals from F1, with fears that a less attractive grid might draw in fewer spectators, and therefore less revenue.

Ottawa is set to contribute $5 million CAN, Quebec $4 million CAN and Montreal $1 million CAN via the Société du Parc Jean-Drapeau, where the iconic and popular Circuit Gilles Villeneuve is situated. Tourism Montreal will chip in the remaining $5 million CAN, with the city’s hoteliers having been convinced to charge a special tax on accommodation over the grand prix weekend, as has been done in the past. In return for their investment, the governments will recoup 30 per cent of the ticket sales.

The new race promoter will be Octane, directed by Legault’s long-time right-hand man François Dumontier.

F1 2009 Wii Review

Layout of menu’s

The setup of the first profile was nice and quick. It asks you for the following:

  1. First Name,
  2. Surname,
  3. Short Name,
  4. Country,
  5. Helmet,
  6. Then to confirm.

It only takes a couple of minutes.

Then you are given the following options:

  • Quick Start,
  • Single Player,
  • Multi Player,
  • Options,
  • Records Room.

Quick Start

Quick start is good for an arcade style quick race.

Single Player

Career

This lasts for three years and you start with either BMW or STR. You are given a target number of Championship points to get for the year. If you complete this target, you can either re-sign or move to a better team. I guess you become a test driver if you do not.

Challenge

The Challenge mode is lots of fun. I have completed level one and nearly level two.

Here is a list of all the different types of challenges:

  • Burning Lap – Complete a flying lap in the shortest time possible,
  • Race – Win the race,
  • Overtake – Pass as many cars as you can,
  • Checkpoint Race – Pass as many checkpoints as you can before the time runs out,
  • Cornering – Corner to score! Take each corner as fast as you can without leaving the track.

On level one, there are six challenges:

  1. Checkpoint Race – Spain,
  2. Checkpoint Race – Bahrain,
  3. Race – China,
  4. Race – Italy,
  5. Burning Lap – Brazil,
  6. Overtake – Spa.

When you have completed a challenge, you are given a grade from A to D. I have completed Level one with everyone A bar Brazil Burning lap where I got a C.

Before you get to level, two you complete a special challenge called the “Heavens Have Opened” at Spa. You are leading the race and it is raining very hard. You are in a Renault and you have to complete the last two laps of the race and try to score, as may points as you can. I got a C grade and finished fifth. It is very hard.

Next to, level two:

  1. Overtake – Brazil
  2. Race – Melbourne
  3. Cornering – Bahrain
  4. Burning Lap – Spain
  5. Checkpoint Race – Brazil
  6. Burning Lap – Spa

I will add the special challenge between level two and three and the level three challenges when I get there.

Time Trial

In time trial, you can choose any car, driver and circuit. You can use this feature to tune car setups, go for fastest time trial metals (Bronze, Silver and Gold) or just learning/Practice tracks.

Grand Prix Weekend

I would recommend is for all hardcore simulation gamers because you run every session just like reality. During the practice sessions you can learn the circuit, tune your car. One problem I have found with this now is you cannot adjust the amount of fuel in the car during a run. Therefore, you could want to go out a do a long twelve lap run on a set of tyres but you may not have enough fuel. The tyres are marked like real life so when you are out on track or watching from the pits you can see which tyres the other drivers are using. While in the pits if you bring up the standing table and press A, you get a live timing, which is a welcome addition to the game. If there is no number in any of the sectors, there are on an out lap. The standard car setups are quite fast to. I would suggest if you are a hardcore gamer to tweak the setup because you can find lots of time. In addition, because the team upgrades where caped around Monaco even if you drive the wheels off, say the McLaren at any race you will not be as quick as the Brawns, Red Bull, etc. I would have liked it setup so you could be quick with a Force India at Monza but at other circuits Force India where slow.

Quail – Much better than in Formula One 2006, you can finish the lap your on after the session ends, etc.

Race – During the race you can get into a much better consistent rhythm than previous games with the ability to push before pit stops

Pit Stops – When you enter the pits you control the car until the limiter line then it is computer controlled, pit stops are lower than on TV.

Race Settings/Setup

You can choose a Difficulty at the top from Beginner, Advanced, Expert or Custom.

Under that, there are seven options to tweak to your liking:

  1. Race Distance – 3 Laps, 10% of Full Race, 25% of Full Race, 50% of Full Race, 75% of Full Race or 100% of Full Race
  2. Opponent Skills – Easy, Medium or Hard
  3. Vehicle Damage – Off or On
  4. Fuel Use & Tyre Wear – Off or On
  5. Weather – Off or On
  6. Component Failure – Off or On
  7. Penalties – Off, Relaxed or Strict

Damage Model

The damage model is ok but could be better if you have a accident you can touch the rear and front wing, lose your wings, break a wheel (like Vettel in Melbourne 09), etc. All problems you just return to the pits and it is solved for you. You do not end the race because you have damaged your car; the damage model is not good enough for that.

Fuel use & Tyre Wear

This is very good if you are going long over 25% of full race distance but under that and there is no point.

Weather

The weather affects the cars a lot more than in previous games, you lose traction, pressures and grip. If your in a race in the wet with Slicks on it is a challenge to stay on the track (remember Hamilton and Kimi – Spa 08/Timo Brazil 08).

Component Failure

If you switch this on it means your engine, Gearbox, Kers, etc could experience faults or failures during the sessions breaking.

Penalties

This on strict is very interesting if you cut the track or hit someone within 30 sec’s the penalties will be given out. Also if you don’t let someone by with 3 blue flags in quail you are put back ten grid slots, in the race you will be given stop go’s or drive thoughts. On comparison to Formula One 2006 there has been lots of improvement in this area. The stupid rev limits have gone and better penalties are here.

Championship

There is not much difference between career and champion. The big difference is that you can choose the driver and team you want to race for.

Multi Player

In Multi player split screen you can race together, complete a complete championship or complete different challenges.

Options

Under options, you can tweak and change options for Controls, Profiles, view credits, camera settings, screen layout, audio and Driving Aids.

Records Room

Driver Resume

From here, you can see what you have achieved on the game. Awards, Total game complete, trophies, medals are all shown. In addition, there is a table show stats about your game play. Total laps completed, Top Speed, Total Distance Driven, Game Time (Hours) and Favourite Constructor are shown in the table. I will publish a post today with my Driver Resume, which I will update once a week.

Awards

The awards are stuff you have unlocked throughout the game. They are split into three sections: Easy, Medium and Hard. I will also add my awards to the Driver Resume post plus awards still locked.

Trophy Cabinet

These shows all the trophy’s you have won in the game for every race plus drivers and constructors championships. Trophy data will be to the Driver Resume post.

Versus

If you have more than one person each with there own profile you can compare them in versus mode.

Lap Records

The lap Records for each track are located here and when you pick a circuit in either Race weekend, Championship, etc your best lap time is shown on the screen also it will tell you if you have been on pole at that circuit before. My records will be on the Driver Résumé post.

Formula One Vault

In the vault, you will find three options:

  1. Circuit Guides
  2. Driver Biographies
  3. Team Profiles

Just a note to say all Statistics in the Vault reflect the start of the 2009 session.

KERS

In this game, every car has Kers, if you are quick at a circuit you do not have to use it much. If you do not use it at all, you can still be quick. I forget to use it every lap of a race. I think it is there for overtaking more than lap time gain. Nevertheless, it works fine, I have tried to use it on the grass/grave/sand and the programming is good enough that while off the track the Kers is not usable. In addition, if you use it while sitting on the grid for example it does not work. When you get more experienced with circuits over a race weekend, you can see where it is more affective and where you could get a gain in lap times.

Racing Wheel Attachment

When I ordered the game I got the Race Wheel attachment now though I am using the Wii remote and the nunchuck. In time, I will practice with the racing wheel but there are dead spots. If you turn the wheel, too much the Wii hits the dead spots and is not as responsive.

Packaging

The packaging the game and attachment come in is very nice looking and it comes with a small book about the controller layout and buttons.

Driving Aids

Visual Aids

Racing Line – Unless you know all the lines, I would leave this on

Mechanical Aids

Steering Assist – If you use the Racing Wheel, I would leave this on until you are very experienced. With the Nunchuck and remote, you could put this on for beginners but after a few hours of experience, you will want to turn this off.

Predictive Breaking – Beginners can leave this on but this game is not like over game in that you have to try to break, you cannot just hold the power down all the time and steer. I switched this off straight away, as you will get used to breaking very quickly as an advanced or expert player

Anti-Skid & Anti Wheel Spin – In other words Traction Control and Stability Control renamed. I have left these on because without it, you cannot pull away from the grid properly and you wear the tyres quicker. Expert players only consider turning these off.

Gearbox – You can use a manual box but one I do not know what the controls are for change gears using the Nunchuck and remote or the racing wheel for that matter. Also two during a full-length race you are so busy with Racing, breaking, lines, KERS, pits stop, the gap between everyone, listening to your race engineer, etc that it is much easier to use a manual. Experts may turn this off as you can gain lap time from perfect manual gearbox changes.

Music and Race Engineer

The menu music is OK but after a while, you may want to switch it off. During other games (F1 06), you are informed about the fights all the way down the field but with F1 2009, you are only told what you need to know. For example, if someone retires, people you are racing pit, you receive a penalty, etc. It is very direct which is good because you do not care about x and y fighting for 17th for example if you are fighting for a win or podium. The engineer during Quail is fantastic; you are informed if some one does a lap quicker than yours, if you do into the drop zone, when the sessions end, etc.

Sum up

Pros

If are on the game for a while and you Wii remote is low on power it will come up and pause so you can switch with a different remote.

Race Engineer Brilliant

Handing is very good

Kers works and you can get a gain when used in the right way

Easy to navigate screens

Wii saves very quickly no need to wait for it to save (Auto-save)

Both compounds of tyre used in the race rule applies

In a race weekend the all sessions but especially Quail is split so you can complete each then close the game and complete the rest later.

Cons

Damage could be better

No Safety car – maybe in 2010 game

No internet playing (like Mario Kart) – Not even internet leader boards for fastest laps, etc

Only two players can play whereas other Wii games four players can play

You cannot save more than one race weekend, etc at a time – so if you want to pause from one and start another you will lose the first one

It could feel a big more hilly on some circuits, it looks it but does not feel it.

Campos car homologated by the FIA

Tags: , , , , , ,

Campos Meta 1’s car for its debut Formula 1 season has been homologated by the FIA following a series of tests last week.

The homologation process was carried out at Dallara’s facilities in Parma, where the Italian manufacturer is designing Campos’s car.

“The homologation of the cockpit is a critical point that defines the status and quality of a Formula 1 car,” said the team’s technical director Toni Cuquerella.

“The fact of having our cockpit completely homologised puts us in a privileged position and allows us to keep on developing the car.

“Dallara has done a great job in order to have everything on time and pass all the tests on the first attempt. We still have to pass the homologation of the rear structure which follows the same process and has already passed our previous internal tests.”

Team boss Adrian Campos added: “It’s a great satisfaction to pass these homologation FIA tests. It shows the technical strength of the partners and suppliers we have gathered for our entry in the Formula 1.

“I want to thank Dallara for the compromise shown in the task of fulfilling the original schedule. We still have a long journey in front of us but at this stage we are confident that we will be able to cover all the steps needed to make it with guarantees to the inaugural weekend of the season in Bahrain”.

Q & A with Nico Rosberg

What is your aim for next year?

NR: The aim is going to be very high for me. I want to win races at least, and then we’ll see. We need to wait a few months to see how the car turns out but I’m confident that we’re going to have a strong package.

What does it mean to be the first German to race a Silver Arrows grand prix car in over 50 years?

NR: It’s incredible. It is definitely quite a special thing. The last time a German raced a Silver Arrow was 1955, so that’s a very long time ago. It’s about time there was a German in a Silver Arrows again.

Nika Lauda says that you have the talent to take on and beat Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton. What is your reaction to that?

NR: It’s very nice to hear that from him and I definitely believe in myself as a racing driver and I’m really looking forward to next year because for sure I’m going to have a great car and I really believe that I’m going to be able to take them on for sure.

Which of the two of them is tougher competition?

NR: That’s difficult to say. We’ll see next year when they are up against each other. I’m not sure. I raced against Lewis, so I can say for sure that Lewis is a great driver and Jenson is a bit more difficult for me to judge but he is certainly a fantastic driver.

Do you regard yourself as German or Finnish?

NR: I definitely regard myself as a German, quite simply because I grew up with the German culture, we spoke German at home and watched German TV. So overall I’m a German.

You said during the year that you had a lot of options for 2010. You’ve now signed for one of the few manufacturer teams in F1 – how important a factor was that in your decision?

NR: It was definitely a factor that was important in my decision. It’s fantastic to be part of a great manufacturer like Mercedes and that together with the team that used to be Brawn GP is the best possible combination for me.

If the driver in the other car is Michael Schumacher, are you confident that you can take him on and beat him?

NR: I don’t want to comment on that, sorry.

Are you surprised that the driver in the other car is not Jenson Button?

NR: It was never certain [to be]. There was a high chance that it was going to be and now it has turned out not to be. That’s just how it went. I wasn’t that involved with what was going on so it was a little bit of a surprise, but not too much.

Would you like to have a German team-mate?

NR: I don’t really mind who my team-mate is. It’s just important that he fits well into the group so that we can attack together for Mercedes GP.

Have you already been to the factory and what do you know about next year’s car?

NR: I will go to the factory on Wednesday because I also waited for the announcement to be done. I’ve been in contact with Ross and the engineers about next year’s car to keep in touch, but I’m really going to start attacking on that front on Wednesday. I’m looking forward to visiting the factory and also there are a lot of people that I know from past years in F1 and it will be nice to see them again.

Who do you see as your main rival?
NR:
I think it’s best to mention teams at this point and the main rivals will most likely be Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull.

You are the first driver to be contracted by Mercedes. How far do you consider yourself a team leader?

NR: It’s something that I would really like to grow into, to become a team leader. That’s what I’ll be pushing to do and you achieve that by working with the team, getting the respect of the team and becoming a team leader in pushing the technical direction and also in terms of results on the track. That’s something that you need to build up and I’m going to try and do that very soon.

Haug refuses to rule out Schumacher

Tags: , , , , , ,

Mercedes motorsport boss Norbert Haug fuelled speculation about Michael Schumacher’s rumoured return to Formula 1, refusing to categorically deny the German could drive for the team.

Team boss Ross Brawn told German newspaper Bild over the weekend that rumours of a possible return by the seven-time champion were a “fantasy of the media”.

“Michael would have come back temporarily for Ferrari but he doesn’t want to begin a new career,” Brawn added.

“I think that we have to live with these speculations,” said Haug during a press conference. “What Ross pointed out, I think we have to respect that. I fully understand that these speculations are ongoing as long as we don’t announce who is driving the other car but that’s what we have to live with.”

When asked to categorically deny Schumacher could drive the car, Haug added: “When will you ever say categorically anything in F1? Ross made it quite clear and I really have nothing to add.”

Mercedes GP chief executive Nick Fry was also unwilling to discuss the Schumacher rumours.

“I’ve got nothing to add to that,” he said. “We are here today to talk about Nico Rosberg and we should stick with that subject. Ross has answered the question extremely well.”

Fry said Mercedes was in no great hurry to finalise who would partner Rosberg in its 2010 line-up, but that the decision was likely within the next month.

“It obviously would have been ideal to announce them together but that’s impossible,” he said.

“We don’t have huge time pressure at the moment, but once one goes beyond Christmas and into the new year it becomes slightly more difficult with seat fits in time for the engineers to talk to the driver. I would hope on the other driver to do it before Christmas purely for logistical reasons.”

Vettel surprised by Button’s switch

Sebastian Vettel was shocked by title rival Jenson Button’s move to McLaren, and expects Mercedes GP to be a strong contender in 2010.

The German, who finished second in this year’s world championship, said he was not expecting Button to leave the team with which he won both the drivers’ and constructors’ titles, especially given that it had just become a manufacturer outfit, with Mercedes taking controlling equity.

“I think it was a surprise to everyone,” Vettel told AUTOSPORT. “Brawn GP, now Mercedes GP, was very very strong this year. They won the drivers’ and constructors’ championships. They had a very good car, a good team and it’s always a surprise if a champion, in a champion team, is leaving.

“You don’t know if things will change completely next year, but in that regard for Brawn GP it was a very positive thing to happen that Mercedes is now taking over and it’s a manufacturer team.

“So it was a surprise and for next year they’re going to be strong. McLaren always has been. This year they were struggling a little bit but I think looking back they’ve always been strong.”

Vettel said it would be intriguing to watch how Button fares as the new boy coming in at McLaren, with Lewis Hamilton entering his fourth season with the team.

“I think it will be interesting,” he said. “They’re obviously both English and McLaren is an English team. Lewis knows the team very well, already for a couple of years now, Jenson is the new one coming in, so we will see.”

The 22-year-old expects the usual top teams to be back in contention for the world championship in 2010, following a year of shake-ups in the established order due to the new tehcnical regulations. However he remains confident of Red Bull Racing getting even stronger after being Brawn GP’s main rival this year.

“I’m very confident in how strong we are in Red Bull and we will get even stronger,” said Vettel. “It will be a nice challenge next year, not only with McLaren, also with Mercedes GP, whose drivers we don’t know yet, and also with Ferrari, same as McLaren.

“The rules change a little bit, no refuelling, a little bit different tyres but not that much. Not like from 2008 to 2009, so we’ll see in the first test.”
